President, Hortco Greenhouses and Garden Center Inc.
Dreux Alvaré is president of Hortco Greenhouses and Garden Center Inc. As president, Alvaré oversees all three divisions of Hortco: wholesale plant production, a retail garden center, and all landscaping services. Wholesale plant production occurs at a 14-acre location where Alvaré is head grower and manages production. Alvaré develops relationships with clientele at the retail gardener center, consulting as expert horticulturist. He also secures landscaping projects, completing hundreds of jobs per year.
Alvaré holds both a pesticide applicators license and a hardscape certification. He was a contracted rose grower for Jackson Perkins, a nursery that produces some of the world’s finest roses. He also holds an annual landscape maintenance contract with Perdue Farms, in Accomac, VA.
In addition to his role as president, Alvaré spent nearly a decade teaching vocational horticulture classes at a local high school. The curriculum included nursery production, greenhouse crop production, turf management, and floral arrangement. Today, Alvaré is often invited to speak to aspiring gardeners within Virginia’s Master Gardeners Certification Program.
Prior to founding Hortco, Alvaré was manager of Bryd Foods Inc. in Accomac, VA, where he managed a 60-acre peach orchard. Previously, Alvaré was head grower for Ralstone Purina in Apopka, FL, where he managed a 20-acre hydroponic greenhouse operation.
Today, Alvaré has over 35 years of experience in the industry. He received a bachelor of science degree in horticulture from the college of agriculture at The Pennsylvania State University. He currently lives in Accomac, VA with his wife, Catherine, and has three daughters.
